7. Biographies

The first project for a new semester had to have a new challenge! While the inspiration and content of our previous projects have mostly relied on personal information and knowledge, this became our first project that required in-depth research. At the end, this project took longer than anticipated, but everybody rose to the challenge! Here are some snapshots of our process. Without further ado, we are proud to present 6 informative and insightful biographies. ENJOY!!

6. Persuasive Speeches

In our first semester, the persuasive writing project took the form of a letter to our Governor and brought us to see Pak Basuki up close and personal (Yay!). This semester, I wanted them to feel the power of the spoken word, as the famous poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson said: “Speech is power, speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel”.  As part of our research, we watched inspiring speeches by kids, including by 10-year old Kid-president on changing the world and 12-year old Severn Suzuki’s speech to the UN assembly. We also made sure to watch one of the most famous speeches of all time, Martin Luther King Jr’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. Once our speeches were ready, we made some time to practice in front of our friends, but then had to go straight to recording in the next class. So please forgive us if we are still looking at the text often! Despite the minimum rehearsal, I think everyone still managed to convey their thoughts and opinions on things kids can do to help the world! Please check out the video through a link I will post up shortly. Get ready to be inspired to take the action!

5. Superheroes

We have been waiting for this project for quite some time, since it was our first fiction writing yet! It was a thrill to be able to share some of the best superhero stories I knew and witness the excitement of everybody making their own. We thoroughly studied the 5 elements necessary in a story, found a catchy tune someone shared on it, and made our own video I’m sharing here. “Plot, character, conflict, theme, setting… Yes, these are the five things… That you will be needing… when you’re reading or writing… a short story that’s mad exciting!” HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR SUPERHERO CREATIONS!

4. Auto-biographies

We started this year’s session with a bang when we found out we could meet Pak Ahok! Thank you to all the writers and their parents for your support, I hope it was as memorable for everyone as it was for me. For the first project, the kids had a chance to read an autobiography that I had written in sixth grade. With the same hope that they will be able to re-read their childhood through their own voice, the writers started to share their life now and their hopes for their future. HOPE YOU ENJOY READING OUR AUTOBIOGRAPHIES! We would love to get your written feedback to put into our writing portfolios!

3A. Persuasive Letters

Our last project of this semester introduced us to persuasive writing, a non-fiction writing intended to convince the reader of an opinion, belief, or idea. We thought it’d be interesting if on this project, not only our loved ones read it, but a person with the power to make changes could read it as well. This was personally my favorite project because I had the opportunity to share letters from kids around the world that have made a difference, and being able to empower the kids that their writing matters! Although the basic writing process always remains the same, each step can be accomplished through many different ways. So this time, we tried different approaches to our brainstorming, outlining, and revision/editing. Here’s a quick snapshot! We sent the signed and decorated letters today, hopefully Pak Ahok can read them on his end of the year break! 🙂 I hope you enjoy reading these letters and please share your feedback to the kids, they’d love to hear your support and enthusiasm!

2. Career Choices

In our second project we looked into the many possible professions and tried to take a deeper look into the careers that we aspired to be. Initially our writing intended to take the form of expository writing, informing readers of the tasks, job descriptions, and the challenges of the chosen profession. However along the way, the essays contained more opinion and became more of a persuasive essay, convincing the readers why the writer would be a spectacular soccer player, architect, renowned chef, professional soccer player, fashion designer, and 14th president of Indonesia! I welcomed the arguments, so this has turned to be an expository/argumentative essay. We also know that whatever career we choose later, being able to write well will be a valuable skill. Here are our writers at work!
